Apprentice

Purpose

The Apprentice Electrician supports the electrical team by gaining hands‑on experience and developing the skills needed to become a licensed electrician. Apprentices receive a blend of classroom instruction and paid on‑the‑job training, learning how to install, maintain, and repair electrical systems in commercial and residential environments. Working under the guidance of a journeyman electrician, apprentices build foundational knowledge, take on increasing responsibilities, and progress toward full proficiency in the trade.

Duties & Responsibilities

Learning & Skill Development

  • Participate in classroom training, safety instruction, and code education.

  • Study electrical theory, system design, and installation standards.

  • Engage in hands‑on training under the supervision of qualified electricians.​

Field Support

  • Assist electricians with installing wiring, conduit, fixtures, and electrical components.

  • Help troubleshoot, repair, and maintain electrical systems.

  • Prepare materials, tools, and work areas for daily tasks.​

Safety & Compliance

  • Follow all safety procedures, regulations, and company policies.

  • Wear required PPE and maintain a clean, safe work environment.

  • Identify potential hazards and report concerns to supervisors.​

Documentation & Reporting

  • Record installation details, measurements, and project notes.

  • Complete checklists and provide updates to the supervising electrician.

  • Maintain accurate logs of training hours and tasks completed.​

Adaptation & Growth

  • Stay current with new technologies, tools, and industry standards.

  • Attend workshops or additional training as required.

  • Take on more complex tasks as skills and confidence grow.

Minimum Requirements

  • Must be at least 18 years old

  • High school diploma, GED, or equivalent

  • Ability to pass basic skills testing, aptitude assessments, color‑vision screening, and drug screening

Qualifications

  • Strong communication and teamwork skills

  • Attention to detail and willingness to learn

  • Ability to follow written and verbal instructions

  • Reliable work ethic and commitment to safety

  • Valid driver’s license may be required

  • Basic understanding of electrical concepts and terminology

  • Ability to work indoors and outdoors in various weather conditions

  • Physical ability to lift and carry heavy materials and equipment

  • Familiarity with electrical safety practices (preferred)

  • Ability to read and follow blueprints and diagrams

  • Problem‑solving skills and the ability to identify issues in the field

  • Strong organization and time‑management abilities

  • Physical stamina and flexibility for tasks involving lifting, bending, climbing, and working in tight spaces

  • Ability to work independently or as part of a team under the direction of a supervisor

Typical Working Conditions

Apprentices may work in a variety of environments depending on the project. Conditions can include standing for long periods, working on ladders or scaffolding, and performing tasks in hot, cold, dusty, wet, or confined spaces. Work may involve exposure to electrical hazards, so strict adherence to safety procedures is essential. Some travel to job sites—potentially up to 80 miles away—may be required.

Equipment Used

  • Hand tools: screwdrivers, pliers, cutters, knives, saws

  • Power tools: drills, sawzalls, band saws, jackhammers

  • Testing equipment: voltmeters, ammeters, ohmmeters

  • Ladders, scaffolding, and other access equipment

Essential Physical Tasks

  • Identifying and separating wires by color

  • Digging and working in trenches

  • Breaking concrete using jackhammers or similar tools

  • Moving, positioning, and securing heavy electrical equipment

  • Installing fixtures, conduit, junction boxes, motors, and wiring

  • Carrying tools and materials between floors or work areas

  • Working from ladders, A‑frames, and scaffolds at various heights

  • Crawling in attics, under floors, and in tight spaces

  • Performing tasks in hot, cold, indoor, and outdoor environments

  • Lifting and using tools and equipment overhead
